The Basics: What is Vaping?
Vaping is becoming more and more popular each day. However, it is being treated by governments and people the same way that cigarettes are treated. E-cigarettes have to abide by the same smoke-zone rules. But is this reasonable and fair? There is a huge debate world-wide right now regarding the treatment of e-cigarettes. This article is meant to inform people as to what vaping actually is, where it originated, and why it is safer than smoking.
So what is vaping?
The action of “vaping” gets its name from the fact that you inhale vapour (instead of smoke). This is produced by an e-cigarette or a vaporiser. These devices are battery powered, and the liquid is heated up turning the e-juice (which we will talk about later) into vapour. This is much like heating up water turns it into water vapour. You inhale this vapour and enjoy the different flavours there are at offer. You can even perform cool tricks with the clear white vapour that is produced.
What am I inhaling (what is e-juice)?
E-juice is usually a combination of propylene glycol (identifiable as PG) and vegetable glycerine (identifiable as VG). The levels of these vary from juice to juice, and are adaptable to your needs. Some people are allergic to one or both of these, so controlling that makes it easy for you to vape safely.
In addition, this vapour usually include a water-soluble food flavouring. This is safe for consumption and gives the vapour a very pleasant taste and smell. The flavours range from bubble gum to mint to coffee, the possibilities are endless. Some e-juices also contain nicotine, although this is optional. However, the addition of nicotine to e-juices has helped a lot of people who are addicted to smoking. They are now able to decrease their consumption of it, and even quit eventually, simply by tailoring the amounts of nicotine. They control their e-juice and decrease the nicotine slowly. How many people vape?
It is estimated that there are around 10 million Americans who currently vape. Around the world, it is estimated that around 30 million or more people vape. These numbers are based on researchers around the world who work with this topic. However, they are simply informed professional estimates.
How did vaping start?
It all started in 1963 when a man named Herbert A. Gilbert patented the very first electronic cigarette. His reasoning behind the creation of an e-cigarette was because he believed that inhaling “burnt stuff” was disgusting. He naturally wanted to seek a healthier alternative. However, it wasn’t until recently that these gained popularity. Mostly because back in the 60s people didn’t have as much research about the negative effects of smoking traditional cigarettes as we do now. We weren’t really looking for alternatives (they liked their normal ciggies). Cigarette ads were still permitted to run on television and you could smoke everywhere (even in restaurants and airplanes). Unfortunately for Gilbert, this technology only got popular after his patent expired (in 2003).
Hon Lik was the next protagonist in the story of e-cigarettes. Lik is a small medical researcher from China, who lost his dad to lung cancer, and was addicted to smoking. He passionately wanted to find a solution or replacement for his unhealthy addiction. In a dream, the idea came to him of smoking clear vapour as opposed to smoke. He turned this dream into reality.
So what are my vaping options?
Good news! Your options are nearly endless. From Gilbert’s humble patent to today’s craze for vaping, there is vaping material for everyone’s vaping needs. The first one you should know is commonly known as a “cigalike” because of its design similarities to real cigarettes. They are easier to buy (more readily available) and are usually the cheapest. However, they are not the best value for money if you’re in it for the long run.
The more common products for vapers who are either trying to quit smoking or want to enjoy vaping in the long run are known in various different ways. Most commonly, they are personal vaporisers (or PVs), mods, or simply vapes. When you invest in one take good care of it, and choose quality e-juices. If you would like to know more about choosing the correct e-juice for you, check out our article here. When well taken care of they can last you a really long time.
Once you have chosen your vaporiser, which you can do with the help of sellers at stores, it is time to choose your e-juice. Keep sampling and trying until you find the perfect taste and composition that best works for you.
Is vaping safer than smoking?
More and more studies are today are showing that vaping is indeed a lot safer than smoking. From the non-existent second-hand smoke to the lack of burning in the process of vaping. There are multiple advantages for those who either enjoy smoking socially or who are addicted to nicotine. You can read about studies and benefits in our article here. In summary, vaping is a lot better than smoking because it doesn’t come with the physical harms of smoking as it does not involve combustion.
What else can I do with vaping?
One trend that has developed in recent years is performing tricks with the vapour produced from vapes. These can be various shapes and forms such as rings, and some artists even perform by setting the vapour on a surface. If you are interested in checking these out, here is a video you can look at.
We hope this article helped you understand a little more about what vaping actually is, and happy vaping!
